In 2005, the boys tennis program began a rebuilding process. Coach Greg Alft stepped into the season with less than 15 total players. Coach Alft, with the help of Eric White, started a no-cut program, focusing on building well-rounded student-athletes. Over the next eight seasons, the Blackshirts have reached enormous heights and seen incredible successes. The Blackshirts have continually had 45-55 boys on the tennis team, including 70 players during the 2011 season! The Blackshirts welcome anyone to play tennis - new players to varsity veterans.
In the new era, the Blackshirts have won two conference tournament titles (2010 and 2015) and won three sectional titles (2010, 2014, and 2016) to add to their 1996 trip to Team State. The boys have sent 25 different athletes to individual state since the 2009 season, including Beef Van Riper, Ben Lock, Neal Johnson, Jordan Freitag, Max Finke, Garrick Read, Tyler Prater, Isaac Jordan, Eric Schneider, Dylan Teutschmann, Jimmy Groh, Derek Elder, Justin Seflow, Justin Gorski, Conner Barnett, Fernando Tejada, Sawyer "the Bonesaw" Dargiewicz, Brett Venzke, Al Tejada, Danny Perez, Matt Arvedson, Chandler Hall, Ben Graichen, Hunter Louis and Riley Teutschmann.
2013 - Our 2013 season was certainly a season to remember. With a 2nd place finish behind state champion Marquette at the DePere/Preble Super 10, the Blackshirts rode momentum to the individual state tournament. South repeated their miraculous 2012 run, by qualifying another FIVE players for the individual state tournament. Only ten schools in division one have those same bragging rights.
2014 - After the incredible success of the 2013 seniors, our 2014 team refused to be outdone. With a strong 14-0 start, and a rough stretch in the middle, the 2014 team rebounded nicely and qualified for the TEAM STATE tennis tournament in Madison, WI on June 13. They are one of the final 8 high school tennis teams in Wisconsin - simply a tremendous accomplish!
2015 - Stepping into the 2015 season, our boys experienced a number of ups and downs. However, the season would prove to be historic nonetheless. The boys, after a tough conference regular season, had perhaps the biggest comeback in Blackshirt Tennis history at the 2015 Classic 8 Conference Tournament. With one round to play, South trailed first place by 5 points with 7 points still on the table. The Blackshirts went 6-1 earning a FIRST PLACE FINISH in the CLASSIC 8 CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT!
2016 - We graduated 5 seniors from the tournament championship season, and lost our Moroccan Missile when his family moved to Canada. With only 4 returning players, the Blackshirts had to reload! And they sure did! With an up and down year that featured another 5-0 weekend in DePere, revenge wins over SPASH and Muskego, an appearance in the first ever "Best of the Best" Wisconsin High School Tennis Coaches Association that Blackshirts had their sites on one goal.
The 2016 team qualified 6 of 7 flights through to the sectional and, with many players chipping in, came to a 32 point tie with last year's champ - Kettle Moraine. South got a 4 singles championship from senior Zach Pittz, and 6 valuable points from our state qualifying one doubles team - Ben Graichen and Zach Pittz. And at 32 all, junior Zach Buehler clinched with a win at 3 singles. Moments later, junior Riley Teutschmann won his second revenge match of the day, qualifying for individual state and solidifying our victory as sectional champs! The Shirts again move on to TEAM STATE!
